When looking at the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam or (PTCE), you must start with meeting the requirements. Those would be the minimum training hours for your state and graduating from an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
For Starters – Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam
With there being only 2 governing national agencies. Which are (NHA) or National Healthcareer Association and the (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. They both offer national tests for those aspiring to become a pharmacy technician. Arizona, Louisiana, Texas and Washington at this time only accept a PTCB certification. Also, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are the 7 states (Including Washington D.C.) that do not require a formal certification for employment. A national license will always get you ahead of the game and on top of the hiring prospect pool though! The PTCB license will get you started towards your career change fast!!
National Pharmacy Technician License Test Details
The (PTCE) Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam is done in the format of 90 multiple choice questions. There are 3 areas of focus. They are listed below:
- Pharmacist Assisting Skills and Abilities – 66% of exam – You must understand the concepts of how to assist the pharmacist on the job and within the standards tought in your accredited training course.
- Control and Management of Active and Non-Active Inventory – 22% of exam- Managing and monitoring all the supplies, medicine and medication inventories.
- Knowledge of Use of All Standards of Practice and Regulations – 12% of exam – Understanding how to handle the dispensing equipment and what federal regulations are.
Certification Examination Locations
Your examination will be done at a local area pre-selected by your respective board or whther or not your state uses the PTCB or the NHA or has any regulations on pharmacy tech licensing at all.
Are There Specific Testing Centers for the PTCE?
Pearson VUE Centers within the United States allow you to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination at one of their facilities. Any active and non-active U.S. military personnel can also feel free to use DANTES sites for the PTCE as well. The test is availble to those eliginle to take and have paid the fee all year long. Just make arrangements with the PTCB for times and locations. You will then have only 90 days to take the test after you have been approved for the taking of the test. The fee is $129.
How Long Does the PTCE Last?
The licensing exam can take about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Your final score of the exam is based on youroverall or total number of correct answers. This means that answering as many if not all the questions will only help you. You can take the exam three times if need and you will also get your results right away if you take it at a testing center! That is really cool!
